On October 31, 2010, a new drunk driving category took effect in Michigan for first time offenders with high blood alcohol content (BAC) readings.
The new Michigan DUI law creates sever penalties for drivers convicted of operating with a BAC of .17 or higher.
Here's what it means if you're caught:
- Violators face up to 180 days in jail, an increase from 93 days
- Fine of $200 but not more than $700, which is an increase from $100
- One year license suspension with restrictions permitted after 45 days, which is an increase from a six- month license suspension
- Up to 360 hours of community service
- The cost of prosecution
- Six points on your driving record
- Mandatory alcohol treatment program for a period of no less than one year.
